21 Oct Keeping Pets Calm Around Fireworks
Bonfire Night and Halloween bring plenty of sparkle and excitement for us, but for many pets, fireworks can be a source of stress and fear. The loud bangs, bright flashes, and unfamiliar noises can be overwhelming. As loving owners, it’s our job to help them feel safe and secure as the bangs go off overhead.
At 4Paws Pet Insurance, we know how important it is to protect our furry friends. Here are some simple, effective ways to keep your dogs, cats, and rabbits calm during firework season.
Dogs
Dogs are often sensitive to sudden noises, but a few small changes can make a big difference.
- Take your dog out for a walk earlier in the day to avoid fireworks while outside.
- Create a safe space – Set up a cosy den with blankets and toys where they can retreat if they’re anxious.
- Play background sounds – the TV, radio, or try Pet Classics on Classic FM, a soothing programme designed especially for pets during fireworks season.
- Dogs look to us for reassurance, so stay calm, remain relaxed and comfort them if they seek attention.
Cats
Cats often hide when they’re nervous – which is perfectly natural. Here’s how you can support them during firework season.
- Keep them indoors and close windows and lock cat flaps before dusk to prevent them from running outside in fear.
- Provide snug safe spaces: hiding spots under beds, in wardrobes, or a cosy blanket fort where they can feel secure.
- Closing curtains will block out flashes.
- Check their microchip details are up to date, just in case they slip out and become disorientated.
Rabbits
Rabbits are especially vulnerable to stress, so they’ll need extra care during firework and bonfire season.
- Bring them closer to the house if possible. Move hutches into a quiet shed, garage, or indoors for the night.
- Dampen the noise by partly covering hutches with blankets to reduce bangs (but leave good ventilation).
- Give extra bedding and plenty of hay for burrowing so they feel more secure.
- Rabbits often feel safer with their bonded partner nearby, so don’t separate them.
Fireworks may be dazzling for us, but they can be daunting for our pets. With a little preparation – from cosy dens and soothing sounds to secure hiding places – you can make this season much less stressful for your furry companions.
