01 Aug Dog Friendly Beaches
Summer is here, so if you’re planning a trip to the beach you won’t want your dog to miss out on the fun. But, before you pack the car and head for the coast it’s worth taking a closer look at the beach you’re heading for as some are more pet friendly than others, with only a small proportion allowing dogs during the summer.
In fact, there are a total of 352 beaches across the country that allow dogs and another 450 beaches with some dog restrictions. So, if you don’t want to get into hot water splashing about in the cold briny, it pays to check first.
We’ve put together our list of some of the best beaches across the country that allows you and your four legged friend to have fun in sun, sea and sand 365 days a year.
Babbacombe Beach in Devon

Sandymouth in Cornwall

Berrow in Somerset
With sand as far as the eye can see this expanse of beach forms part of a seven mile stretch of beach going from Burnham-on-Sea to Brean Down. Thought by many to be one of Somerset’s most stunning beaches, Berrow is accessed through sand dunes which make for a great walk in themselves. Just be aware that at low tide soft sand and mud can be exposed near the shoreline which can be dangerous.
Kingsgate in Margate
Margate is a popular seaside destination and if you’re taking your dog, then why not try Kingsgate Beach? Close to Margate, this small beach offers superb golden sands that dogs are welcome to enjoy all year.
Balmedie in Aberdeen
This stunning beach is sure to tire out both you and your dog with five miles of sand dunes to explore. The perfect spot for the whole family, you can even hire a beach barbeque between April to September and cook a meal right on the beach!
Climping in Sussex
Popular with surfers (and their dogs), this quiet beach is the perfect spot for a walk. An area of scientific interest it is also partly a nature reserve and eagle-eyed Dr Who fans might recognise it as the spot where not one, but two episodes were filmed back in 1967 and 1975.
Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire
This idyllic spot with its stunning craggy cliff backdrop is a great place for day trips. Part of the fossil coast of the area, you might even find the odd dinosaur fossil as you walk along the cliffs and rocks. If you’re really lucky a bone!
Lligwy Beach on Anglesey
Lligwy Beach, or Traeth Lligwy as the locals call it, is a beautiful sandy beach just a short drive from the coastal village of Moelfre. With its expanse of sand as well as undulating sand dunes it has plenty of space for you and your dog to explore. This beach is also popular for water sports and you might even see kitesurfing if it’s windy enough.
Bispham Beach in Lancashire
Just down the road from Blackpool, you can leave the kiss-me-quick hats and crowds behind and head to this much quieter long beach. A gently sloping sandy beach at low tide, you can stroll its split level promenade if the tide’s in when you get there. Please be aware though that the beach is accessed via steps, so not suitable if you have mobility problems, but of course, you can still enjoy the upper and lower promenades.
