12 Dec New Year Resolutions
How to help your pet get in shape in the new year
‘Getting into shape’ is probably the most common New Year’s resolution made, with few very motivated individuals actually seeing this through. Our New Year’s goals push us to do something beneficial for our health and lifestyle so why don’t we put a little spin on it and think about our pets? How can we make sure they’re in tip top shape too?
Young pups and kittens aren’t hard to get moving, in fact, it’s probably harder getting them to sit still! Their non-stop antics keep them running, chasing, clambering and climbing all day long (with the occasional nap to recharge their batteries!). However, when pets get a little older they can become a bit lazy and can lose some of their more energetic and lively habits.
Treats
The easiest way to keep a pet moving is simple – treats! Our 4-legged friends will do almost anything for their favourite foods! Instead of just handing them over, try hiding them around the house or garden to encourage them to get moving and explore. You can use treat puzzle games too which are a great way to get your pet cat or dog curious about how to get to their favourite treat. It’s a great way to exercise the body and mind!
Dogs
If you’re a dog owner, keep in mind that dogs often enjoy a little fruit and veg. Take a look at our blog on the dos and don’t of fruit and veg for your dog before introducing any into their diets.
Adult dogs and cats tend to get a bit lazier after they turn 5 – they may prefer to snuggle in a warm spot in the house, rather than venturing further afield. This is where a new years resolution to become fit can pay off for you, and your pet!
A long walk on New Year’s Day to blow the cobwebs away can become more of a regular occurrence. Why not make your dog an exercise plan? Start them off gently and slowly increase the amount and duration of ‘walkies.’ Slowly they will increase their fitness and stamina and will soon enjoy long walks in different locations. Make sure you mix it up a little and don’t take them on the same route every day – variety is the spice of life afterall!
Cats
Now, we’re not suggesting you necessarily put a cat on a lead and take it out on a walk. Most cats wouldn’t react well to being walked on a lead, but what cats do like doing is hunting! Come up with some games that mimic hunting – this can be done inside the house or outside. Use toys that resemble what a cat would consider prey, for example small toys and objects with different textures.
Keep moving
It’s important to keep your pets moving as, like us, they can suffer with arthritis. If arthritis does set in, it doesn’t mean they have to stop exercising all together. Work with your vet in finding out what movements are best for them so they can stay fit and healthy for longer.
Looking good
Unlike most of us, pets aren’t too bothered with how they look physically, so exercise for body image isn’t a thing. It is however important to make sure they are getting enough exercise so they don’t become overweight. Increased body fat can have serious medical side effects which can impact their health and shorten their lives – and let’s face it, we want them to live forever! Good exercise and a healthy diet will keep them on the right side of the scales, so it’s important to keep their lifestyle in check.
