17 Jun Rabbit Awareness Week 2025
Creating Happy, Hoppy Homes for Your Bunny
Every year, Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) brings the UK’s rabbit-loving community together to promote better understanding and care for one of the nation’s most cherished – and often overlooked – pets. This year the week falls June 23rd – 27th. As pet insurance specialists who proudly provide cover for rabbits, we’re excited to support this year’s theme: “Happy, Hoppy Homes”.
It’s all about making sure your rabbit has a living space that keeps them physically healthy, mentally stimulated and emotionally content. So, what does that actually look like?
Why “Happy, Hoppy Homes” matter
Rabbits are incredibly intelligent and social animals who need much more than just a small hutch in the garden. Sadly, many rabbits in still live in cramped or unsuitable conditions, which can lead to health problems, stress and behavioural issues.
A truly happy, hoppy home gives your rabbit:
- Room to run, stretch and explore
- A safe, secure shelter
- Opportunities for play and enrichment
- Company from other rabbits
- Love and care from their humans
What does a rabbit-friendly home look like?
Whether indoors or outdoors, your rabbit’s environment should allow them to express natural behaviours like digging, hopping and hiding. Here are some essentials for creating a rabbit-approved living space:
- Plenty of space
Rabbits need space to move! A minimum of 3m x 2m x 1m (about the size of a garden shed) is recommended for a pair of rabbits, with constant access – not just during the day. - A safe shelter
Your rabbits should have a secure, weatherproof shelter filled with soft bedding, hiding spots and enrichment items. Indoors or outdoors, the space should be predator-proof and escape-proof. - Enrichment and play
Provide tunnels, platforms, chew toys and digging areas to keep your bunny active and engaged. Rotate toys regularly to keep things interesting. - Social companionship
Rabbits are social animals and thrive with a bonded partner of their own kind. Solo rabbits can become lonely and depressed, so consider adopting a pair (and get them neutered!). - Regular human interaction
Bunnies love to be part of the family. Spend time with them daily and handle them gently to build trust and confidence.
