A Seasonal Guide to Autumn Pet Care
As the days grow shorter and the crisp autumn air rolls in, we humans naturally reach for our scarves, hot drinks and cosy blankets. But our pets feel the change in seasons too. Autumn brings new sights, smells and challenges for dogs, cats, and rabbits alike. At 4Paws Pet Insurance, we know how important it is to keep your furry friends safe and happy all year round, so here’s our seasonal guide to adjusting your pet’s routine for the cooler months ahead.
Dog Owners: Walks, weather and wellness
Autumn is a great time for dog walks! The crunch of leaves under paws, the cooler temperatures and all the new scents drifting on the breeze. But it also brings some things to watch out for:
- Adjust your walk times. Shorter days mean fewer daylight hours. Try to walk your dog earlier to make the most of natural light, or invest in reflective leads, collars and jackets for evening strolls.
- Watch out for slippery surfaces! Wet leaves can be just as slippery as ice. Keep an eye on your dog’s footing (and yours!).
- Be wary of seasonal hazards. Conkers, acorns and certain fungi can be toxic if ingested. Keep curious noses away from them.
- Check the temperature. Dogs with shorter coats may appreciate a cosy jumper at home, especially older pets with joint stiffness.
Cat Owners: Cosy corners and outdoor adventures
Cats are creatures of comfort, and autumn provides plenty of excuses for them to curl up in warm spots. But if your cat enjoys the outdoors, you may need to tweak their routine:
- Check your doors. Make sure your cat flap isn’t letting in drafts.
- Make sure they can be easily seen. If your cat wears a collar, choose one with reflective strips to keep them visible during darker evenings.
- Keep indoor play exciting. Rainy days may mean less outdoor exploring. Encourage exercise indoors with climbing trees, puzzle toys and interactive play.
- Watch what they’re eating. As activity levels drop, keep an eye on portion sizes to prevent seasonal weight gain.
Rabbit Owners: Outdoor hutches and cosy corners
Rabbits are sensitive to temperature changes, and autumn is the time to prepare for the colder months ahead:
- Hutch insulation. If your rabbit lives outdoors, check for drafts and damp spots. Add extra bedding like hay or straw for warmth.
- Weatherproofing their home. Position hutches away from direct wind and rain, and consider a waterproof cover.
- Encourage movement. Provide safe, dry areas for exercise. Rabbits need space to hop, even when it’s cold!
- Monitor their health. Damp environments can lead to respiratory problems. Keep hutches clean, dry and well-ventilated.
It’s the season for snuggles!
Whether your pet is chasing leaves, curling up on the sofa, or snuggling into fresh hay, autumn is a season of transition and comfort. With a few adjustments to their routine, you can help your furry family members stay safe, happy and healthy as the days grow cooler.
Have a happy, cosy, safe autumn!
